Latin American Shopping Mall Giant Adopts Latest Digital Two-way Radio Solution

Sao Bernardo Plaza, located at São Bernardo do Campo which is part of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, has more than 200 stores with eight cinemas and complete leisure options for the family. It is one of the 44 malls which are owned by BRMALLS, the largest shopping mall company in Latin America. Currently, BRMALLS has a total gross leasable area of 1,612.9 thousand m² and an owned gross leasable area of 950.1 thousand m².

The smooth and safe running of the shopping centre is reliant on multiple teams being able to communicate instantly and efficiently across the large site – something the legacy analogue system at Sao Bernardo Plaza was failing to deliver.

The Staff Deserves Better Communications

Sao Bernardo Plaza previously housed an older analogue radio system which struggled to provide the radio communications coverage required in an ever-growing and complex site. Sao Bernardo Plaza had two fundamental issues they were actively looking to resolve.

Firstly, communication black spots and noisy and intermittent radio communications. An unreliable communications network where there were inherent health and safety risks could potentially result in teams not receiving messages during critical emergency procedures. It was, therefore essential to management that moving forward, that all Sao Bernardo Plaza staff could contact one another and communicate across the whole site instantly at any given time.

Secondly, the old system provided limited capacity, without any advanced features such as voice recording, positioning and dispatching. These features would help the Plaza to be able to centralize and control communications on site and record all radio communications through a central PC based Dispatcher console. This functionality would allow the managers to better coordinate their teams across the site, and record radio communications for any incident investigations.

Unifying Communications for Different Requirements

Using Hytera DMR repeaters RD986S to provide the full site coverage required, and using this new digital technology, 2 voice channels on each repeater meant that security and maintenance would both have their own channels.

When choosing to upgrade their radio estate, Sao Bernardo Plaza also had to take into consideration the needs of multiple departments and user groups. A lightweight portable radio enables the staff to reach out to colleagues while easing the burden they need to carry through a long work shift. These small sleek and lightweight radios, PD356 and PD506, are the perfect pairing for those on long shifts. These digital radios are also robust and durable, provide full site coverage with excellent audio quality, come with long-lasting lithium-ion batteries and are very easy to use. For the security guards, they can easily initiate an emergency alarm to alert all the relevant roles, which is very important when the traffic is high at weekends and holidays. Voice-operated Transmit (VOX) feature and accessory release users’ hands when talking over radios.

Sao Bernardo Plaza now is equipped with a fully operational, integrated digital radio communication system. The staff has been very impressed by the much improved and reliable coverage, the instant communications and flexibility, as well as the functionality offered by the lightweight yet rugged radio handsets.

Voice from Customer

“What has improved greatly in our network was the fact that the equipment is more modern, the lightness of the equipment is felt, and it facilitates the work of those who have to move all day. Now we can hear the whole conversation more clearly, thus making a daily operation much more productive.”
